For years, a Saturday in Hixson meant driving south. Downtown for dinner, the Riverwalk for a stroll, maybe Northshore if you wanted a patio. That commute is shorter this summer. A free lakeside concert series debuted at Chester Frost, the greenway along North Chickamauga Creek keeps quietly expanding its use, and the stretch of Highway 153 between Northgate Mall and Hixson Pike added three national openings in eighteen months. If you already live here, the case for staying inside the 37343 on a weekend is stronger than it has been in a decade.
Saturday, August 15: the last Lakeside Live of the season
The most-underpublicized new thing in Hixson this year is a concert series that did not exist twelve months ago. Hamilton County Parks & Recreation introduced Lakeside Live!, a new, free summer concert series at Chester Frost Park, featuring three concert nights of music, food, and fun.
The 2026 season closes on Saturday, August 15. The lineup wraps with Amber Carrington and opening act Bella Lamb and the Boys at Chester Frost Park, 2277 Gold Pointe Circle N., Hixson, with family activities beginning at 4:00 p.m., "doors" open at 6:00 p.m., and music starting at 7:00 p.m.
A few practical notes if you have not been to one yet:
- The venue is Shelter 1, not the beach. Bring a lawn chair or blanket.
- The series is made possible through support from the Riverview Foundation and is the first concert series of its kind at Chester Frost Park. Translation: it is free, and turnout has been growing show over show.
- The park's own leadership frames it as a full-day play, not a drop-in. As Deputy Director Karen Shostak put it, spend the day at the beach, bring your dog to the dog park, ride bikes, maybe camp for the weekend, then enjoy live music on the lake, all possible during Lakeside Live show dates.
The August 15 show is worth planning around because the next one is nine months away.
The Chester Frost trail question worth watching
If you use the park more than a few times a year, there is a planning conversation happening that will affect how you move through it. On March 3, 2026, Hamilton County Parks & Recreation held a public Q&A at the Chester Frost Park Pavilion, 7989 Causeway Road, about a proposed trail/pathway system running from the campground area to the beach area at Chester Frost Park.
Right now the walk between those two zones is a road-shoulder affair. A dedicated path would functionally double the park's usable footprint for people who arrived on foot or by bike. The proposal is not final, but if you have opinions about how the park should evolve, this is the file to follow at parks.hamiltontn.gov.
Greenway Farms is a bigger park than most Hixson residents use
Ask ten neighbors about Greenway Farms and nine will describe the paved loop by the dog park. That is roughly a fifth of the acreage.
The full picture: Greenway Farm Park is a 180-acre city park along North Chickamauga Creek in Hixson, located off Hamill Road approximately 1 mile east of Highway 153, with 6 miles of walking, running, hiking, and biking trails and 2 canoe access points along a 2.5-mile stretch of North Chickamauga Creek; facilities include the farmhouse available for rent, an off-leash dog park, and bathroom facilities.
Two segments most locals skip:
The old TVA quarry overlook. Among the scenic views along the Greenway Trail is the quarry originally excavated by the Tennessee Valley Authority as a source of limestone for the construction of Chickamauga Dam; a portion of the Greenway Trail follows the old haul road to the dam, the quarry is now flooded, and the cliff created by the quarry's high wall is an impressive sight. The overlook sits maybe fifteen minutes off the main paved loop. If you have never seen it, that is the walk this weekend.
The Boy Scout Trail. The Boy Scout Trail within TVA's Big Ridge Small Wild Area is the only trail along the Greenway restricted to foot traffic only; the Small Wild Area is a sensitive preserve of plant and animal habitats and includes a population of the federally threatened wildflower Scutellaria montana, or large-flowered skullcap, and the Boy Scout Trail is a steep trek up the side of Big Ridge that makes it a challenging 1.25-mile loop. This is the closest thing to real elevation you can get to from a Hixson driveway without loading a car onto Highway 27.
For paddlers, the creek reads different than it starts. North Chickamauga Creek begins on the Cumberland Plateau, spilling Class IV/V whitewater down the ridge until it flattens in the Tennessee River valley; when the creek reaches the community of Hixson, it becomes a perfect creek for families and beginners in any type of paddle craft to enjoy an afternoon paddle along the 2.5-mile stretch that bends around a peninsula at the Greenway Farm Park. A short shuttle, no whitewater, ninety minutes of flat water. That is a hard combination to find inside a metro of this size.
What actually opened on Highway 153 this year
Hixson's restaurant conversation used to be a short one. That is no longer true, and the pace of arrivals is telling on its own.
Raising Cane's, Highway 153. Raising Cane's arrived in Hixson in June 2026 with its first Chattanooga-area location, and the new restaurant at 5435 Highway 153 off Highway 135 is the 11th Raising Cane's in the Volunteer State. The detail worth noting is that Chattanooga waited this long for a location, and Hixson got it first. That is the traffic count on 153 talking.
CAVA at Northgate Mall. CAVA opened in the Hixson area of Chattanooga in September 2024, at 454 Northgate Mall Drive, Hixson, TN 37343 in Northgate Mall. The Mediterranean fast-casual slot was arguably the biggest missing category in the local lineup. It filled quietly, and now it is the default weekday lunch for a lot of the corridor.
Chicken Salad Chick, Hixson Pike. Chicken Salad Chick relocated from downtown Chattanooga's Market Street after nearly seven years to a new location in the suburban Hixson area at 5100 Hixson Pike, featuring a drive-thru and expanded patio seating. A brand leaving downtown for a Hixson build-out is the kind of decision that reflects where their customers actually are.
Coming soon. Visit Chattanooga lists Hawaiian Bros Island Grill for Hixson as forthcoming, described as a casual spot for Hawaiian comfort food including plate lunches, Dole soft serve, and Spam musubi.
The local independents are still doing the heavy lifting on personality:
- Drip Kitchen and Coffee is worth the detour for the outdoor seating alone. Regulars talk about the frozen coffee, a large avocado toast, and a molasses coffee that the coffee crowd rates highly. There is a fire pit and it is genuinely kid-friendly.
- La Catrina Mexican Food, which many residents first met as a food truck around Chattanooga, has settled in as one of the area's better taco stops.
- Dixie BBQ runs a walk-up window with outdoor seating and Southern plates centered on tender beef, potato salad, baked beans, onion rings, and Texas toast.
- El Maguey Mexican Restaurant #3 is the neighborhood standby, and the pastoria quesadilla with chorizo is the order to know.
That is a food scene that did not exist in this shape three years ago.
A weekend template that stays inside 37343
If you want a Saturday that never crosses the river, here is a workable order of operations for August 15:
- 8:30 a.m. Coffee and avocado toast at Drip Kitchen and Coffee. Take it to the fire pit if the weather allows.
- 10:00 a.m. Greenway Farms. Park at the Gann Store Road service gate rather than the Hamill Road dog park, walk the paved loop out to the TVA quarry overlook, and add the Boy Scout Trail if you want elevation.
- 12:30 p.m. Tacos at La Catrina, or the walk-up window at Dixie BBQ.
- 2:00 p.m. Home. Rest. The evening is long.
- 4:00 p.m. Chester Frost Park, Shelter 1. Family activities open. Blanket, chairs, cooler within park rules.
- 7:00 p.m. Bella Lamb and the Boys, then Amber Carrington.
- After the show. Drive north on Gold Point Circle, not south. You will beat the exit line by ten minutes.
What this means for the neighborhood
None of the above is a real estate pitch. It is an observation about a place. A ZIP code that adds a free county concert series, a proposed park trail expansion, three national restaurant openings, and a still-underused 180-acre creek park is a ZIP code where the case for staying home on a Saturday is getting stronger every quarter. That is not a market forecast. It is what changes look like on the ground before a market forecast catches up to them.
